Your password
Every Salford University student has their own individual username and password to acccess their network account, and other computing services.
Do I need to change my student network password?
Your network password has been set to expire the first time you login on campus. This is so you can change it to one that only you know. You are responsible for the activity that takes place on your account so it is essential that you do not give your network password to anyone.
How do I change my network password?
You can change your network password any time you are logged in to a PC on campus.
We strongly recommend that you protect your network account by using a password consisting of at least eight characters with a combination of letters, numbers and symbols.
- Press Ctrl, Alt and Delete
- Select the Change password option
- Click on Salford and then complete the password boxes
- Select OK to save changes.
I've forgotten my network username/password - what should I do?
You can ask for help with this at the Service Desk at any one of the library sites, but you must take your University ID card as proof of identity. If you are a distance learner/part time student you can call ITS Service Desk and ask for the information to be sent to you by post.
Do I need a different username for Student Email?
The University has introduced a new improved email service for students, to replace the old Student Webmail service.
To find out how to access this go to Student Email.
Do I need a different username for Blackboard?
No, to access Blackboard, on and off campus, you will use your network login username and password.
Blackboard is the name of the University's virtual learning environment software. You'll find information relating to your course, notices about exams, or your tutors may place lecture and course notes.
Athens username/password
Athens is a national password system of authentication, and once registered at the University you are given an individual Athens username/password. An increasing number of our electronic resources - indexes, databases, e-journals and e-books, etc. - require your Athens username/password. This information is stored in a text file called Password.txt on your F: drive.
Your Athens username/password is case sensitive.
- enter your username in lower case letters, e.g. salnvb382
- enter your password in upper case e.g. GXK937
If a database requires a different username/password then ask at any library Service Desk (you will need to show your University ID card).
