Wireless working
Wireless networks operate in most of the main buildings in the University. Wherever wireless connections are available, you should find wirelesshotspot signs, and can then connect to the internet.
How do I get connected?
Consult the appropriate user guide below to get started with the wireless service; and the Troubleshooting guide [pdf] is very useful should you encounter any difficulties using the service.
You will need the Encryption key: UniversityOfSalfordWLAN
It is case sensitive so remember to use it carefully. Please ensure that your device supports WPA2-PSK.
SSID: all University buildings have the same SSID - UoS-WLAN
Which buildings have wireless hotspots?
Most University buildings have wireless coverage.
| Building | Coverage |
|---|---|
| Acton Square | All areas |
| Adelphi Building | All areas |
| Adelphi House | All areas |
| Allerton Annexe | All areas |
| Allerton Building | All areas |

What services can I access once I've connected?
When you connect, you will need your Salford username and password. You can then browse the web and use any services that are accessed through a web browser, such as:
- Your Salford Student Webmail and Staff Webmail
- Your Salford home filestore (for example, your F:) and other shared drives.
- The Library Catalogue and e-Library.
What can I do to keep my laptop as secure as possible?
It is important that your laptop computer is secure before you connect it to the University's wireless service. You must have installed up to date anti-virus software and all security updates to your laptop's operating system.
For example, if you are using a laptop PC running Windows, you should switch on the Microsoft Update service - see our Computing guide Microsoft Update service [pdf] for more information.
Please contact the ITS Service Desk (email its-servicedesk@salford.ac.uk or call 0161 295 2444) if you wish to give feedback about this service, or want help with using it.
Read the Service Level Agreement (SLA) document for Network Access Service.
